The Kaia String Quartet currently focuses on exploring the music of Latin American composers, both contemporary and traditional. Our concert includes music by Silvestre Revueltas, a Mexican composer and violinist, and others. Kaia has been named Ensemble in Residence of the Latin Music Festival of Chicago since 2012. Kaia's members are Victoria Moreira and Naomi Culp, violin; Sixto Franco Chordá, viola; and Veronica Nettles, cello.
In December 2013 the festival brought Kaia and Grammy-winning Paquito D’Rivera together on Chicago’s Mayne Stage, along with Chicago jazz sensations Ernie Adams and Larry Gray as well as Ondas Ensemble’s Rick Ferguson. The broadcast was aired live on WFMT 98.7 and featured on NPR’s New Year’s Eve “Toast of the Nation.” Kaia String Quartet has made several appearances of WFMT radio, including features on Impromptu as well as live broadcasts from the Chicago Cultural Center. Their involvement in the Latin American community includes collaborations with Chicago’s Tangata ensemble and features at Old Town School of Folk Music, Chicago Summer Dance Festival, and the Latin American Music Center conference at Indiana University.
The quartet has been presented since 2013 by Promotoras de Bellas Artes in Mi Festival to give educational and formal concerts in the Tijuana region of Mexico. This Mexico/California tour consists of roughly 24 educational concerts for elementary students as well as performances in the San Diego, Los Angeles, and Tijuana regions.
