Caldecott Exhibit Celebration

When: Saturday, June 01, 2013 - 1:30 PM - 4:30 PM
Where: Skokie Public Library at Radmacher Gallery/Foyer

Join us for a fun-filled afternoon celebrating the art of children's picture books. There will be a "look and find" game with the artwork, get your picture taken with your favorite picture book and other fun activities. We will also have visits from authors/illustrators from Caldecott Medal and honor books. Staff from the Book Stall at Chestnut Court will be onsite selling copies of the authors books and signing will be available. No registration is required. Great fun for the whole family!

Creepy Carrots with Aaron Reynolds

Where: Skokie Public Library at Mary Radmacher Meeting Room

The author of this year’s Caldecott honor book Creepy Carrots will be here to talk about how it went from a creepy idea to a creepy finished book. In addition he will talk about what it is like to write a story and then give it to someone else to create the pictures. Kids will also discover how Aaron, a kid who hated books, grew into a guy who creates books for a living. Recommended for children ages 5 and up. No registration is required.

Creating Art with Caldecott illustrator Eric Rohmann

Where: Skokie Public Library at Mary Radmacher Meeting Room

The Caldecott Medal recipient for My Friend Rabbit and the Caldecott-honor book Time Flies returns to Skokie Public Library to talk about the process of creating art for children’s picture books. His artwork is featured in the Caldecott exhibit. He will even bring is Caldecott medal to show the kids. Recommended for children ages 5 and up.

Young Steinway Concert: Alexander Campbell, trumpet and Zihan Xiong, piano

When: Sunday, June 02, 2013 - 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Where: Skokie Public Library at Petty Auditorium

Alexander Campbell, a junior at Maine South High School in Park Ridge, studies trumpet with James Davis. He plays first trumpet in his school’s concert and jazz bands and has toured Europe for three weeks with the Blue Lake International Jazz Orchestra.

Pianist Zihan Xiong, a freshman at New Trier High School in Northfield, studies piano with Brenda Huang. She was awarded honorable mention in the 2012 Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra Youth Auditions and Sejong Piano Competition Junior Division, among other honors

Summertime Preschool Storytime

Each week of this special storytime features a different librarian and his or her favorite stories, rhymes, and fingerplays for an all-around good time! For children ages 3 to 6. Children must be at least 3 years old by the start of the program and parents must remain in the Youth Services Department during the storytime. Registration is not required.

Summertime Rock and Read for Babies and Toddlers, Too

Babies and toddlers, ages 16 to 35 months, and their parents/caregivers interact through stories, fingerplays, music, and poetry. Siblings are welcome. Registration is not required.

More Than Just the 1, 2, and 3s : A Math Storytime

Where: Skokie Public Library at Youth Services Program Room

Join us for this parent/child storytime featuring fun stories, songs, and activities all fostering early math literacy. This program is for children ages 4 to 5 accompanied by a parent/caregiver. Registration begins May 1 and attendees must attend all four weeks of the session. Siblings are welcome.

Booking with a Buddy Little Buddy Preregistration

Where: Skokie Public Library

BOOKING WITH A BUDDY will be back for another exciting summer at Skokie Public Library! Children who will enter 1st through 3rd grades in the fall can participate in this fun literacy program designed to promote reading outside of the school year. "Little Buddy" participants spend one hour each week for a 5-week period reading with "Big Buddy" volunteers who range in age from junior high school students to senior adults. Please note that while this program encourages reading, it is not a tutoring program and all "Big Buddies" are volunteers.
       BOOKING WITH A BUDDY time slots are scheduled for Mondays and Thursdays in the Youth Services Department. "Little Buddies" are matched by Youth Services staff and time slots are assigned based on the availability of "Big Buddy" volunteers.
       BOOKING WITH A BUDDY will run from Thursday, June 27 through Thursday, August 1. By preregistering online, you have saved your child a space in the program. You will still need to complete a full program application, which is due back to the library by Sunday, June 9. If you register online or over the phone, you will be mailed an application.
       For kids entering grades 1 through 3 in the fall. Preregistration is required and begins May 1. Space is limited.

Radio Disney Under the Stars

Where: Skokie Public Library at Skokie Village Green

Join the Radio Disney Road Crew as they help us celebrate the start of our Summer Reading Club. There will be fun contests, games, and dancing on the Village Green. Bring blankets and/or lawn chairs to sit on. In the event of rain, the event will be moved indoors where seating may be limited. This event is sponsored by North Shore University Health System-Skokie Hospital. For kids, teens, and families. Registration is not required.

Rubber-band Race Cars

Build your own rubber-band powered race car in this hands-on workshop. You'll be able to decorate, customize, and--of course--race your cars! For kids going into grades 4 to 6. Registration is required and begins June 1.

Book Babies

LEGO CodeBots Club

Family Movie Night: Hugo

Hey Dad, Let's Go Outside and Play!
